You step up to the front of the room, ready to begin. Your hands are clammy, your heart is racing, and suddenly, your carefully planned words seem to vanish into thin air. Sound familiar? If you’ve ever felt the gut-wrenching grip of stage fright before a training session, you’re not alone. The good news? Even the most seasoned facilitators have been there—and more importantly, they’ve learned how to manage it.
Stage fright isn’t about eliminating nerves; it’s about transforming that nervous energy into confidence and presence. Here are five powerful strategies that Team BrightSpark swears by to help you do just that:

1️⃣ The Power Pose: Own Your Space
Before your session starts, take a moment in a private space and strike a power pose—stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart, hands on hips (think superhero stance). Research shows that holding a confident posture for just two minutes can reduce stress hormones and increase feelings of confidence.
🔹 Try This: Before stepping in front of your audience, take 30 seconds to stand in a strong, open posture. You’ll feel more in control, and your presence will reflect it.
2️⃣ Breathe Like a Pro: Slow It Down
When nerves kick in, your breathing gets shallow, making you feel even more anxious. Combat this by using the 4-7-8 breathing technique:
Inhale deeply for 4 seconds
Hold your breath for 7 seconds
Exhale slowly for 8 seconds
This simple technique slows your heart rate, calms your nerves, and helps you regain control before you speak.
🔹 Try This: Practice deep breathing right before your session begins. Bonus: It also helps you maintain a steady, clear voice!

3️⃣ Reframe the Fear: It’s Excitement, Not Anxiety
Your brain doesn’t know the difference between excitement and anxiety—it’s all adrenaline. Instead of thinking, “I’m so nervous,” tell yourself, “I’m
excited for this opportunity!” This simple shift reframes your energy in a positive way and tricks your mind into confidence mode.
🔹 Try This: Next time you feel those pre-session jitters, say out loud, “I’m excited to share this!” Notice how it changes your mindset.
4️⃣ Connect Before You Start: Break the Ice
Walking into a silent room can be intimidating, but guess what? Your learners feel it too. Instead of diving straight into your session, engage in small talk, greet participants, or ask a lighthearted question to warm up the room. This builds connection and reduces the pressure on you.
🔹 Try This: Arrive a few minutes early and casually chat with attendees. You’ll feel more at ease, and so will they!
5️⃣ Use the 3-Second Power Pause: Own the Moment
One of the most powerful techniques to appear confident (even when you don’t feel it) is the 3-Second Power Pause. Before you start speaking, take three full seconds to:
Stand still and breathe
Make eye contact with your audience
Smile before delivering your first words
This pause commands attention, exudes confidence, and allows you to settle into your presence before you launch into your session.
🔹 Try This: The next time you start a session, pause for three seconds before speaking. It might feel long to you, but to your audience, it will look poised and intentional.
🎯 Your Challenge: Try the 3-Second Power Pause before your next training session and see how it affects your confidence. Notice how your presence feels stronger, and your connection with the audience deepens.
